Overall, how would you rate this villa?

5 stars

Your testimonial:
My wife, family and I spent a wonderful week in this enchanted villa. The view was spectacular, with beautiful sunsets nightly. It was quiet, peaceful, restful, and restorative. Our stay at Villa Gigandas was the best part of our three week French vacation. The village was small, but friendly. The local restaurants were good. There was a small market but a larger one was close by in another village.
Gigondas was in a good location for day trips including a fun drive to Mt. Vonteax and Sault. The owner's wine was excellent and villa itself is surrounded by his beautiful vinyards. The village is a short hike away and there are plenty of other hikes near the villa and village. We highly recommend a stay at this enchanted villa.

May 2022

Did the villa meet your expectation?
Yes - location, tranquility, reasonably high 'feeling of quality' ( interior, utensils, appliances etc...)

How were you treated by the property’s staff and manager?

How would you rate the cleanliness of the villa

Overall how would you rate this villa?

Please detail what would have made your stay even better:
Would be good if the master bedroom had an en suite toilet, but we understand the practical problems for arranging that.

Excellent property, rather unique location. We are planning to return.

August 2021

Did the villa meet your expectation?
Better than what I expected
Please detail the reasons why:
Photos did not adequately capture the gorgeous view and really lovely interiors- the windows that open out onto the terrace were fabulous to let in the fresh breezes.
Were you able to find the property easily?
Yes, but with some issues
Please detail any issues you may have had:
The first time up the winding steep gravel road was a bit challenging- we ended at the cemetery and thought we made a wrong turn.
How were you treated by the property’s staff and manager?

Please detail what went well/not well:
We were met by the family and they were very responsive and helpful with any questions.

How would you rate the cleanliness of the villa
5 Stars
Please detail any issues experienced:
The only issue was we booked for two weeks and the cleaning at the end of the first was not as complete as we would expect- broom left in the middle of the room with all the sweepings. Also seems several wine glasses were missing after the cleaning. I went ahead and replaced the glasses with new ones.

If you booked a chef or tour services, what was your experience?
NA. No chef booked.

Are you willing to share a testimonial with other potential renters?
Your testimonial::
Once you arrive, the house was fabulous- the view was spectacular. Rooms were spacious and well appointed. Lots of windows to get fresh air. The kitchen was well stocked from high end appliances to pretty much all the cooking tools needed. Loved the large floor to ceiling windows that opened out onto the terrace. Pool was great for refreshing swims. Easy walk to the village. We spent our days collecting food stuffs and wines from the surrounding villages and cooked wonderful meals and drank delicious wines. We had 6 adults one week and 5 adults the next week- plenty of space inside and out for everyone to be together or do their own thing. Would return

Q. Testimonial for Only Provence
R. The villa we chose in Gigondas was exactly what we had hoped for. We had a super holiday with the added bonus of superb views.

Absolutely loved the property. Such a peaceful location but just minutes from the village. The house was well set up - inside and outside. Extremely comfortable.

Would you recommend Bastide de Gigondas, Only Provence, Chefs or Tours? Why or why not?

Yes. Property and Company both good. Didn’t use the chefs or tours which seemed very expensive.

What star rating would you give Bastide de Gigondas? 5
What star rating would you give Only Provence? 5

Our visit to Bastide de Gigondas was everything we had hoped for and more. The villa is stunning, very comfortable and the location looking across the Rhone valley is wonderful. We had lovely sunsets, many enjoyed from the pool terrace.

We wanted a location where we could feel like we were living in a village, not just being tourists, and where we could explore the best that Provence has to offer. Bastide de Gigondas fulfilled this in every way. It was lovely to be able to walk down (the many steps) to the village to enjoy a meal, or drive to one of the nearby villages to sample wine and see the sights.

Areas for improvement:
I can't think of anything to improve

Would you recommend Bastide de Gigondas and Only Provence?

Absolutely I would recommend the villa and Only Provence. The villa was fantastic, and the owner was delightful, helping us in his limited English to make the most of the location and even dropping in a couple of complimentary bottles of his own wine to enjoy. The booking process through Only Provence was straightforward and the correspondence we received was great.

What star rating would you give Bastide de Gigondas? Definitely a 5
What star rating would you give Only Provence? 5

I was nervous about booking this type of accommodation online for a group of friends, mainly because it was a sizable amount of money we were sending sight unseen, however with each step of the booking process with Only Provence I felt more and more confident. The quick responses and detailed information helped tremendously. If the villa we stayed in is indicative, the properties on offer are exceptional and are as described on the website. I would definitely use Only Provence again in the future.

I just want to thank all involved at Only Provence for everything. The villa stay had been planned for three years to celebrate a significant birthday milestone for several of us, so we were hoping for something exceptional, and the villa delivered. We now have some wonderful memories to share and hopefully we will have a chance to go back to Provence another time.

Everything exceeded my expectations.
The house was great and the location perfect for what the group needed. The billing, directions, description, info material, etc were all helpful.

No criticisms or suggestions

If our group gets together next year, we will be calling you

Thanks for everything

Gigondas, this little village with its great name is situated in Upper Vaucluse at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail.

This little village with only 700 inhabitants is an absolutely essential stop for lovers of this world renowned vintage. In Roman times the village was called "Jocunditas" which means joy or rejoicing... its famous vintage was already appreciated in those days.

Gigondas - Calade

The region turned to single crop farming - wine-growing - following the great frosts of 1929 and 1956 which destroyed the ancient olive trees.

The Gigondas "appellation d'origine" was requested as early as 1924, but was not granted until 1971.

Gigondas - Street

Vineyards here cover an area of 12 km² and more than five million bottles are put on the market each year. These wines are powerful and generous, robust and well-balanced.

Gigondas is nicely located at the foot of a hill, nestling beneath its church which dominates all the Gigondas vineyards. The church square offers a superb panoramic view. The Dentelles de Montmirail situated in the Gigondas area act as a backdrop to the village and offer numerous walks.

Gigondas - Street

Arriving in Gigondas via the secondary road that runs through the lower part of the village you will come across a succession of cafés and cellars leading up to the Place Gabriel Andéol where the mairie and the winegrowers cooperative are located.

Leave your car here and take the time to discover this village that is continuously being restored, developed and enhanced.

Walk up through the pretty streets and alleyways lined with stonework houses to reach Ste Catherine's parish church with its beautiful 14th century facade. On the way you will be able to admire the fine view that you have of the region and which extends right to the Cevennes.

Gigondas - Fountain

Next to the church you will be able to visit the Hospices, via a stairway-like trail lined with 21 monumental sculptures, the work of contemporary artists. These buildings were erected by a religious brotherhood in 1678 to care for poor people and children.

Following the revolution, in 1800, they became a Hospice. They were then left unused for the next 2 centuries.

It was not until 1982 that these ruins started to come to life again and little by little the Hospice was restored thanks to the association "Gigondas d’hier et d’aujourd’hui", the mayor, the local winegrowers and numerous voluntary efforts. Today on the ground floor you will find wine cellars offering wine tasting installed by the winegrowers' association, and upstairs a contemporary art exhibition.

Getting here:
The easiest way to get to Inland Provence from the US is to fly to Marseilles International Airport (MRS). If you would like to see Paris, fly to Charles de Gaulle Airport then connect directly to the TGV(high speed train) from CDG TGV2 to Avignon TGV(3 hours direct) and rent a car. You would plan to see Paris on the way back, taking the TGV from Avignon TGV to Gare de Lyon, getting a cab to your hotel in the city.
