Q. Testimonial for Only Provence
R. We happened on Only Provence through the Internet, and we are so glad we did. We found the perfect villa for our family reunion of nine people, including a baby and two older children. We had wonderful service from the person who identified the villa for us, the finance manager, the concierge and the chef services person. Thank you for an excellent experience!

Q. What else could we provide to improve your stay?
R. A queen size bed in the double-bed room would have been nice. The double bed was a little small for our adult couple on a hot night. More chairs around the pool. We could have used more outlets for charging phones.

Q. Is there anything that needs to be replaced or updated?
R. No, everything seemed to be working properly. It would have been nice to have a blender or food processor there.

Q. Did you book any chef or tour services? If so, what was your experience?
R. Yes

Q. Chef Tour Experience Details
R. Cyrille was a wonderful chef. He stepped in when our first choice was no longer available. This was a surprise, but he did a wonderful job. The meal was delicious, perfect for all of us (including a vegetarian and children) and he served it on our patio with a bottle of champagne. I would suggest that you check about the villa's equipment before arriving, as he needed a blender and there was none there after much searching.

Q. Would you consider staying here again?
R. Yes

Q. What did you like about your experience?
R. Our stay at this villa was the highlight of our month-long trip around France. To wake up in the morning to the sound of church bells in a 14th century priory, with swallows swooping past our window, and that gorgeous morning light was an experience we will always remember. There was a heat wave in France when we were there, but the cool water pool helped us rejuvenate after a day of sight-seeing and there were fans in every bedroom. There was plenty of room for our extended family of nine, two beautiful places to gather to eat -- one inside, one outside -- ping-pong and lots of games and activities to do, a wonderful record collection, a fantastic kitchen. The owners even had fresh fruit, breakfast fixings, cheese and wine in the refrigerator to welcome us. I can't say enough good things about Le Prieuré and the warm welcome we received!

Q. What is one thing we could do to improve your experience with Only Provence in the future?
R. Not a thing. Only Provence was terrific.

Q. Testimonial for Only Provence
R. We highly recommend this agent, villa, and owner and will make Only Provence our go-to source for future Provence vacation rentals.

Q. What did you like about your experience?
R. I would consider staying here again, but nothing was really open in CNDP during our stay at the beginning of April. We wish we had stayed somewhere with more things that were open. We couldn't really even find restaurants to take us in the evening.

Le Prieure was spacious and beautiful and Chateauneuf du Pape is exactly what you imagine an idyllic French village to be. We loved foraging for food at the various little stores in the village, late morning and afternoon swims and preparing elaborate dinners in the evenings. The views were spectacular from the villa and we had lovely suppers either outside on the patio or in the lovely dining room. Our evenings were spent listening to music, playing chess with our children and enjoying the wines of the region. The bocce ball and ping pong table were also fun with as a family. There are also wonderful restaurants all within walking distance of the villa.

Before we arrived I was concerned as the temperatures were expected to be quite high but we shut the windows and shutters in the late morning as instructed and it stayed nice and cool inside. We were able to open up in the evenings and enjoy the lovely temperatures. It was incredible how the villa retained the cool air. I had requested fans which Only Provence provided but only ended up using a few nights. We had a wonderful experience and would use Only Provence again.

Would you recommend Le Prieuré de Chateauneuf, Only Provence?

Yes, the villa is beautiful and the village idyllic with wonderful restaurants, bakeries and small stores. There are many amazing areas to explore outside of the village as well. Only Provence was very helpful leading up to our stay. The owners of the villa were extremely responsive and helpful as well when I had a question.

We really enjoyed the house. Living in a 14th century house is a wonderful way to feel like you are really away on vacation. The house is large and beautiful and the location is amazing. The views are stunning looking across the village and vineyards to the Rhone River, Avignon, and beyond. You feel as if you are living in a castle. We also really enjoyed shopping in the village for groceries, meats, and bread, all just a short walk.

I am back from France and just wanted to tell you that we had a wonderful time in Chateauneuf du Pape.

We had an absolutely wonderful evening with chef Gerald and I will be writing to him directly to let him know how happy we were with the whole experience. He's such a great chef and a very personable man who was very patient with us. The food was delicious.

I also wanted to thank you for all your help over the last few months. As the chief organizer of the group of 8 people, I found it quite challenging to get things organized. Anyway, your help with the chef and the restaurant reservations, the directions to Auchan and everything else you did was wonderful. I really appreciate all the information and help.

Thanks so much Louise - your help made our trip wonderful!

What did we like:
Lots of space - very well equipped for eating in - good kitchen with lots of pots and pans, dishes, appliances etc. Plenty of decent wine glasses - nice china for dinners at home. well equipped for a large number of people. The house was in a great location for us as we wanted to walk to different wineries. The internet worked well despite the fact that we had 13 devices on at once - it did not work in all locations of the house, but did work very well in some of the bedrooms, the living room and the office. The photos on the website are very true to what we found in the house. It is a lovely house!

Louise did a fabulous job as concierge - great responsiveness, very good suggestions and went out of her way to secure a dinner reservation for us on the first night. We had an amazing meal with Chef Gerald and he provided us with one of our best meals and was very personable. He made some great wine matching suggestions.

Greeter: Met us as expected on day of arrival and day of departure. I was a bit concerned that any issues with the house were to be emailed or phoned in to the owner who lives in Paris as I generally find local support to be better, but we did not have any issues.

Appliances - lovely to have a real clothes dryer in the house and we used it. We appreciated the availability of the user manuals for most of the appliances but would have liked one for the gas barbecue as the valve set up is different from North American standard, but we did get it working. Blow dryers for hair in each bathroom would be appreciated. There was only one in the house.

Areas for improvement: While there is public parking across from the house, it is difficult to access. Only one of our cars could really use the space and since it is public, there's no guarantee that space is available. I think it would be better to let people know that parking is more likely to be available down the street at the public lot.

We could have used more outdoor seating.

Finally, I think it would be useful to provide a floor plan for the house in the listing.

Beautiful home. Well maintained and up to date. Heavenly. Only downside was morning churchbell.

Areas for improvement: None

We loved the home, the grounds, the location, and the owner. It was elegant and beautiful, yet comfortable and very thoughtfully set up. It felt like staying in the home of a good friend. We appreciated how well-stocked the kitchen was, the barbecue outside, the toys for the children, the market bags that we could use for our morning bakery runs, and all the extra linens and towels (having the pool towels were very convenient). It was a wonderful experience. The location in the village, close to restaurants and shops and wine-tasting caves could not be beat.
The only drawbacks were things that the owner really didn’t have control over:
1. Parking. The road to the house and the parking area are very small. One day we were blocked in, and other times there wasn’t a spot available for us. This was partially because we rented a large van rather than a small car. Next time I think we would get 2 small cars instead. We ended up parking in a lot down the hill, in public parking, and walking to the house. Really not much could be done about this – it’s just the way the house/street/parking is laid out.
2. Internet. The wifi within the house worked fine, but the connectivity from the home to the internet was very spotty. Probably just because the town is so small and not well-connected. There were only a couple hours a day that we could get on-line. Again, not much the owner could do about this since the problem was upstream from the home’s wifi, but it could be a problem if someone needed to work remotely while they were away.
I would highly recommend this property to other people looking to rent, especially if they were interested in the region’s wine. It’s the perfect place to do tastings and tour local vineyards.

We are enjoying your lovely home so much.
The location is fantastic- the views are beautiful and the house is so comfortable. The decor is really great- the colors, furniture and simplicity- its so well done!
I am in love with your bed linens- where can i find them?!
What antique market location would you recommend?
Warmly
Julie

Locale

Located between Avignon and Orange, Chateauneuf-du-Pape spreads out at the foot of the remains of it's fortress castle.

The village looks over the plain of Comtat and the 3 000 hectares of vine fields. The village is almost completely dedicated to its world famous wine "Chateauneuf du Pape" which is also part of the similarly famous Cotes du Rhone.

In the XIVe century Pope Jean XXII, chose Chateauneuf as the location for their summer residences, and then decided to plant vines on the stony land which surrounded their landholdings. For a long time the wine production remained a secret but started to become well known in the XVIIIe century but it was in 1929, that it was officially recognized and bestowed with it's own appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This appellation means that the wine production in Chateauneuf du Pape is subject to strict controls to ensure that the 55 vineyards produce an extremely fine wine.

When you visit the village stop at the "place de la Fontaine". In the center of the village you will find a number of wine tasting cellars from the different domaines. If you don't know exactly what you are looking for the choice will be very difficult and wine tasting can quickly make you dizzy... The cellar facades are all different from each other. Some seem luxurious even pretentious, others are extremely simple. Some are on the ground floor of a village house, others you need to go through a small doorway or down a narrow passageway. Whatever, here all the roads lead to the altar of good fine wine.

Continue your village visit down the twisting narrow streets with their numerous beautiful fountains including the XIV° century Souspiron fountain, you'll see the ancient bread oven and olive press and you can walk as far as the Papal castle built by his holiness Pope Jean XXII between 1316 and 1333. Wide stone staircases take you up to the fortress where the Popes lived until 1377, and their return to Rome. The fortress was badly destroyed by fire during the religious wars and then further damaged in 1944. Little remains apart from a short stretch of wall, one of the high towers and a lower room. However from the ruins there is a 360 ° panoramic view over the Rhône valley , the Luberon, Avignon and the papal Palace which can be seen in the background.

At the exit to the village there is an interesting little museum of wine making equipment at the Anselme vineyard. The Museum displays a large collection of wine making tools and machinery some of which date back to the XVI° century. These include a wine press, barrels and numerous cork screws.

Further on you can find the Romanesque Saint Théodoric 's chapel which holds art exhibitions during the summer months.

Getting here:
The easiest way to get to Inland Provence from the US is to fly to Marseilles International Airport (MRS). If you would like to see Paris, fly to Charles de Gaulle Airport then connect directly to the TGV(high speed train) from CDG TGV2 to Avignon TGV(3 hours direct) and rent a car. You would plan to see Paris on the way back, taking the TGV from Avignon TGV to Gare de Lyon, getting a cab to your hotel in the city.
