Mas de la Tourelle is a true wonder, tucked in the middle of a vast grove of olive trees. Historically, this property was once a postal relay station, then a farm, and now a wonderfully renovated vacation home situated between the famous cities of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Arles.
This 16 acre property offers perfect views of the Alpilles and is composed of a main bastide, an adjacent Mas and an ancient tower. Each of these lovely stone buildings offers the best in luxury amenities. Due to its size, Mas de la Tourelle is ideal for families traveling together, or for large groups seeking privacy while still being able to gather together in various communal areas such as the pool house or under the shade of the 200 old tree.
The main Bastide has three bedrooms with private bathrooms and is recently renovated and fully air-conditioned. The ground floor kitchen, dining room and lounge area open onto the terraces leading to the pool. There is an adjacent Mas (house) which is entirely independent, though of course never rented separately to other groups. A ground floor kitchen opens to a large shaded terrace to enjoy long lunches and dinners. The entire Mas is air-conditioned, and offers a level of comfort mimicking that of the main Bastide. Lastly, the Tower is entirely independent from the other buildings and overlooks the valley. There is a kitchen and a sitting room on the ground floor, and one bedroom with bathroom on each upper floor. Again, the level of comfort here is high, and it is fully air-conditioned. A great place for guests seeking extra privacy.
The property is surrounded by manicured Provençal gardens, as well as olive and fruit groves. A large pool area with terrace offers gorgeous views of this garden space, as well as the Alpilles hills in the distance. From the property, you are less than 15 minutes from the popular villages of Fontvieille, Les Bauxde-Provence and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with a vast array of boutiques, cafes, markets and restaurants. In less than 30 minutes, you will also find the historical cities of Arles, Nîmes and Avignon.
7 km north east of Arles and 8 km south of the Baux de Provence via the D17. Fontvieille - Daudet's windmill Fontvieille is situated in the heart of the "Provence des Alpilles", not far from the historic arena at Arles, and the citadel of Les Baux de Provence, the museums of Saint-Rémy and the Avignon Festival which is less than 30km away ! Fontvieille - Church After having left Arles, you will follow a pretty road (the D17 in the direction of Les Baux and Maussane) which crosses the superb countryside of the Alpilles with its vast fields of olive trees, shrubs and lush green fields, with the majestic Montmajour abbey in the distance. Fontvieille - Town hall Arriving in Fontvieille, you will discover a picturesque village with its ancient houses built from stone extracted from the famous quarries founded in the 15th century. The arenas at Arles and Nîmes, the 14th century château at Tarascon and most recently the Palais Longchamps and the Bourse at Marseille have all been built from the same stone. Fontvieille - Mautauban castle Fontvieille is the village where Alphonse Daudet wrote his famous "Lettres de Mon Moulin". To visit the "Moulin de Daudet" and its small museum, climb the small hill until you reach the summit where the wind-mill overlooks the valley. From the hill (easy to climb), you will have a superb view of the Alpilles and the "Château de Montauban" where Daudet lived from time-to-time. Fontvieille - Church It was here, surrounded by this "scenery of stone" (or "caillasse" as they say here), on this hill-top covered in olives, pine-trees and oaks that Daudet found the inspiration for his stories. He dreamt up his characters while listening to the stories from the shepherds and inhabitants of the Montauban château. A variety of walking-tracks ranging from 2 to 9 km are available so visitors can appreciate the beauty of the natural environment, and it is even possible to walk in the foot-steps of la chévre de M. Seguin!
The easiest way to get to Inland Provence from the US is to fly to Marseille International Airport (MRS). If you would like to see Paris, fly to Charles de Gaulle Airport then connect directly to the TGV (high speed train) from CDG TGV2 to Avignon TGV (3 hours direct) and rent a car. You would plan to see Paris on the way back, taking the TGV from Avignon TGV to Paris Gare de Lyon, getting a cab to your hotel in the city.
