By 8am, village squares transform into vibrant open-air theaters—vendors arranging pyramids of tomatoes, wheels of aged chèvre stacked beside lavender honey, olives glistening in hand-painted ceramic bowls. The air fills with the scent of rotisserie chicken, fresh herbs, and just-baked fougasse.
This is where you’ll find the real Provence. Farmers who’ve worked the same land for generations. Fishmongers with the morning’s catch from the Mediterranean. The cheese vendor who insists you taste before you buy.
Every village has its market day. Plan your week around them.
Markets run from roughly 8am to 1pm, but the best is before noon.
While some vendors accept cards, many prefer cash. Small bills are always appreciated.
A basket or tote is part of the experience. Don’t have one? Grab one at the market!
Even a simple “Bonjour” goes a long way. Point, smile, and don’t be shy.
Many markets include clothing, linens, pottery, antiques, and local crafts.
Friday
One of the Luberon’s most charming Friday morning markets, set against the backdrop of a Renaissance château. A refined mix of local produce, artisan goods, and Provençal textiles—with excellent cafés lining the streets for lunch.
Sunday & Thursday
The most famous market in Provence—and for good reason. Sunday brings hundreds of vendors along the canals, with one of Europe’s best antique and brocante markets alongside the food stalls. Thursday offers a smaller, more local experience.
Saturday
Saturday mornings in Apt bring one of Provence’s largest and most authentic markets. Stretching through the old town, it’s where locals stock up on fruits confits, lavender, charcuterie, and seasonal produce straight from Luberon farms.
Wednesday
Wednesday mornings transform the old town into a sensory overload of color and fragrance. One of the most photogenic markets in the Alpilles, with a wonderful balance of everyday Provençal goods and artisan finds beneath the plane trees.
Tuesday & Friday
A tiny, unhurried Friday morning market in one of the Alpilles’ most quietly elegant villages. Just a handful of producers selling exceptional olive oils, goat cheeses, and seasonal vegetables—exactly the Provence the crowds miss.
Tuesday
Tuesday mornings draw a smaller but beautifully curated market to one of France’s most stunning hilltop settings. Local cheeses, olive oils, and seasonal produce—with views across the Luberon valley as your backdrop.
Don’t miss: Cavaillon — a lively local market known for its melons in summer and authentic Provençal atmosphere year-round.
Monday Markets
Don’t miss: Cucuron — a small but stunning market set around a tree-lined basin that feels like a film set.
Tuesday Markets
Don’t miss: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence — one of the region’s most photogenic markets, winding through the old town beneath the plane trees.
Wednesday Markets
Don’t miss: Roussillon — a modest market in an extraordinary setting, with the village’s famous ochre cliffs as your backdrop.
Thursday Markets
Don’t miss: Lourmarin — a refined Friday morning market at the foot of a Renaissance château, with excellent cafés for lingering.
Friday Markets
Don’t miss: Apt — the Luberon’s largest market, where locals fill their baskets with fruits confits, charcuterie, and seasonal produce from nearby farms.
Saturday Markets
Don’t miss: L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue — one of Europe’s top antique and brocante markets, stretching along the canals.
