The region around Ménerbes has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of early human settlement found in nearby caves and rock shelters. During the Roman period, the area was part of the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. Roman artifacts, including coins and pottery, have been found in and around Ménerbes, indicating Roman presence and activity. Ménerbes began to take shape as a village in the early medieval period and by the 11th century, Ménerbes had developed into a fortified village. The construction of the castle (Château de Ménerbes) and the village’s defensive walls began during this time.
Jumping to the 20th century, Ménerbes became known as a haven for artists and writers. Notable residents included Picasso’s muse Dora Maar and British author Peter Mayle, Today, Ménerbes is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning views, historic architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. It retains to this day much of its medieval charm with narrow streets, ancient buildings, and picturesque landscapes.
The Citadel of Ménerbes
One cannot talk about Menerbes without mentioning its historical Citadel. Dating back to the medieval period, this fortress provides a glimpse into the village’s rich past. The Dora Maar House

The Luberon Regional Park and the nearby Cedar Forest are protected natural areas offering hiking, cycling, and scenic drives. Within them are numerous trails and picturesque landscapes. If you like to kayak, drive to nearby Fontaine de Vaucluse and spend an afternoon enjoying the cool waters of the Sorgues.
Ménerbes’ weekly market is a feast for the senses. Held every Thursday morning, the market bursts with vibrant colors and enticing aromas. Here, you’ll find fresh produce, artisan cheeses, cured meats, and handcrafted goods. It’s the perfect place to sample local specialties and pick up unique souvenirs. The surrounding villages also hold their own market day, each one having its own spirit and vibe. The Apt market, held on Saturdays is by far the largest in the area and well worth a visit. When visiting Ménerbes, you will be only a short drive from some of the most well known villages in the region.
Gordes: One of the most beautiful villages in France, known for its picturesque stone buildings and narrow streets. In and around Gordes you can visit Château de Gordes, Sénanque Abbey, and the Village des Bories (ancient dry stone huts).
Roussillon: Famous for its vibrant ochre cliffs and buildings.
Besides wandering its beautiful and colorful streets, for sure visit the Ochre Trail (Sentier des Ocres), and the Conservatoire des Ocres et de la Couleur.
Bonnieux – A charming hilltop village with stunning views of the Luberon Valley.
Climb up to the Old Church (Vieille Église) for fantastic vistas. On the way out of town, visit Pont Julien, an ancient Roman bridge.
Lourmarin – Known for its Renaissance castle and lively market.
This village has great charm and is loaded with boutiques and cafes. Visit the old Château de Lourmarin, and Café Gaby (a popular spot frequented by artists and writers).
