On the Water

Emerald rivers, turquoise calanques, and the wild open waters of the Camargue.

Dive Into Adventure: Water Sports Across Provence

The lavender gets the attention, but Provence has always been shaped by its water. The Sorgue springs cold and clear from underground and runs turquoise through antique-lined towns. The Calanques drop suddenly from limestone cliffs into a sea so blue it looks invented. The Camargue spreads wide and strange and still, a wetland kingdom at the edge of the Mediterranean. Each one rewards those willing to get on the water — or in it.

Whether you’re paddling a glassy river with children in tow, cruising a hidden cove off Cassis by private boat, or gliding through the Camargue in search of flamingos, the experiences are as varied as the landscapes themselves. This is Provence from a completely different angle — and one most visitors never see.

Kayaking the Sorgue River

The Sorgue is one of those rivers that stops people mid-paddle just to look. Fed by one of Europe’s most powerful natural springs at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the water runs crystal clear and cold — emerald-green and shallow enough to watch fat trout move beneath the hull. The classic family route drifts eight kilometers downstream to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, taking around two hours, requiring no experience, and offering some of the most quietly beautiful scenery in the region.

For families planning a Provence adventure, our guide to the Sorgue — including operator recommendations, timing, and what to expect — is worth reading before you go: The Ultimate Provence Adventure Guide for Families.

On the Water in the Camargue

The Camargue operates by entirely different rules. Flat, vast, and hauntingly beautiful, this protected wetland south of Arles is most alive at water level, where the reed beds open into lagoons, flamingos wade in shallow pink salt marshes, and the horizon dissolves into sky.

Boat excursions through the Camargue’s waterways offer access to areas impossible to reach on foot or by road, and a perspective on the landscape that is slow, immersive, and genuinely unlike anywhere else in France.

Boating the Calanques

The Calanques are extraordinary from the cliff paths above. From the water, they are something else entirely. These narrow limestone inlets — carved over millennia by the sea — drop sheer white walls into water that shifts from turquoise to deep cobalt depending on the depth and the hour.

A private boat trip from Cassis puts the best of the Calanques within reach: hidden coves only accessible from the sea, quiet swimming stops away from the crowds, and views back toward the cliffs that no photograph quite captures.
