For guests staying at one of our private villas, we almost always recommend a rental car to make the most of your time in Provence. Below, we’ve outlined what to know before you get behind the wheel.
1. Book Well in Advance
Rental cars, like luxury villas, are in high demand from May through September. Availability can be limited, especially for automatic cars, and prices climb closer to summer. Reserve early to secure the best choice for your holiday.
2. Where to Collect Your Car
The most convenient pickup points are major airports (Marseille-Provence, Nice, Avignon, or Montpellier) and high-speed train stations (Avignon TGV or Aix-en-Provence TGV). Picking up in a village is a rare option and for the city centers (Aix, Avignon, Marseille) it can add stress due to finding your way in and out, narrow streets, and limited parking. For these reasons, we suggest starting your car rental at an airport or TGV hub.
3. Size Matters in Provence
The cobbled lanes and arched gateways of villages like Gordes or Roussillon weren’t designed with modern SUVs in mind. A smaller vehicle makes life easier for parking and navigating, though families may prefer a more spacious option for longer drives. Finding the right balance between size and comfort will be an important personal decision.
4. Manual vs. Automatic
Manual transmission is still the default in France. Automatic cars are available but somewhat limited and at times come at a premium—another reason to book early if you prefer one.
5. Tolls & Scenic Drives
France’s autoroutes are efficient and well-maintained, but tolls add up quickly. If time allows, we recommend mixing in the smaller scenic roads. They may be slower, but the rewards are immense: vineyards, sunflower fields, and authentic glimpses of Provençal life.
6. Parking in Villages
Most historic centers in the larger cities are car-free. Instead, you’ll find well-marked lots just outside the walls, usually only a short walk away. Arriving early or later in the evening helps avoid crowds. In villages be on the look out for the blue “P” sign posts, There is usually ample parking but know that they do fill up in the most popular villages (Gordes, Lourmarin, St Remy).
7. Fuel & Practicalities
Pay close attention when refueling—“essence sans plomb” is unleaded petrol, while “gazole” is diesel. Many rural stations are automated and require chip-and-pin cards, so it’s wise to fill up before heading into remote areas.

Public charging is still limited outside the larger cities, so don’t assume you’ll find a station in smaller villages. The best strategy is to charge at your villa overnight and plan daily drives with distance in mind.
